History

History was originally taught in the Faculty of Philosophy. The Faculty of History was formed in 1972.
The Faculty of History comprises all core areas for the study of history. Research covers the period from early Greece to the recent past. Particular emphasis is given to the history of Eastern Europe and of North America. The regional history of Southwestern Germany and related topics are also emphasized.
Each subject area is represented by a specific teaching chair. Each institute, department and seminar in the Faculty is an autonomous institution. Each is involved in numerous national and international research projects.
Other faculties in the University contain their own institutes for specific areas of historical research: Art History, Legal History, Ecclesiastical History, History of Science, History of Medicine, etc. The Faculty of History maintains close working relationships with these institutes.

Teaching Staff and Students

The Faculty's teaching staff consists of thirteen professors and about thirty lecturers and instructors.
About 2,000 students were studying in the Faculty in the Winter Semester, 1993 - 1994.

Curricula and Degrees

The Faculty of History offers two curricula: Teacher Certification and Master of Arts.
Teacher Certification qualifies the student to teach in German public schools. The Master of Arts prepares the student for a wide variety of professional positions, depending on individual interest and qualifications.
Both curricula are divided into two stages. The first stage of study is the same for both curricula, except for the required languages. The second stage of the Teacher Certification curriculum teaches history from a general perspective. The second stage of the Master of Arts curriculum is specialized in the various fields of historical study.
The Faculty offers postgraduate studies leading to the Ph.D. Doctoral students have access to the excellent research facilities of the Faculty½s libraries and to the University library. Doctoral students receive careful guidance and supervision, on the personal level and in doctoral seminars. Normal time for completion of doctoral studies is about three years.
